Where Land Meets Sea - A Walking Journey Through Tohoku’s Resilient Coast

AN ACTIVE ADVENTURE LIKE NO OTHER

Just imagine it: 7 active days and 6 restful nights exploring the northeastern pacific coast of Tohoku, Japan. Where sheer cliffs meet restless ocean swells, small fishing villages rest in protected coves, and communities carry forward stories of loss, strength, and renewal.

This trip traces sections of the Michinoku Coastal Trail through Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures —not as a challenge to conquer, but as a path to walk with intention. Here, movement becomes meditation, landscape becomes teacher, and story becomes connection.

Your week in Japan will be filled with:
🌿 Daily walks experiencing Michinoku Coastal Trail
💦 Opportunities to learn and immerse yourself in Japanese culture
🧘‍♀️ Evening onsen in warm mineral waters
🍴 Fresh, local meals that nourish and refuel
🐋 A morning stand up paddle experience
🛶 Kayaking off the Tanasashi Coast through sculpted rock formations
💫 And plenty of time to rest, reflect, or just be

In Tohoku, nature is elemental and honest. The coastline reshapes itself. The sea both gives and takes. Villages rebuild. Through mindful hiking, cultural exchange, ocean immersion, and guided reflection, we explore how outer landscapes mirror our inner terrain.

I’m partnering with Finisterra Travel for this trip. Finisterra is a BC-based, women owned boutique travel agency. They are committed to using their collective expertise to curate unique, joyful, relevant and ethical experiences for curious-minded travellers, to contribute to long-term tourism sustainability. Finisterra is comprised of international travel designers with a flair for unique experiences and extraordinary adventures.

We’ll stay in a selection of locally owned hotels dotted along the coast, allowing us to experience as much as possible of this unique region of Japan. We’ll also spend one night in a unique glamping experience that’s all about comfort and connection to nature. Think cozy, well-appointed tents or cabins with beds, electricity, and toilets; more boutique stay than backcountry camping. Accommodations are shared, either with a partner or a fellow guest of the same gender (we’ll match you up). Want your own space? A limited number of single rooms are available for a small upgrade. If that’s your vibe, book early!

This isn’t your average vacation, it’s part adventure, part reflection, part cultural immersion and all about connection, with yourself & nature.
If coastal views, fresh air, good company, and unforgettable days sound like your kind of getaway, I’d love for you to come along.

Your Retreat Host

Meet Marisa Mae

Hi! I’m Marisa, and I’d absolutely love to spend a week exploring the wild beauty of northern Japan with you. The Tohoku region is full of dramatic cliffs and rock formations, peaceful forest paths, and quiet seaside villages that feel worlds away from the bustle of the cities. 🌿🌊

Japan has a way of blending nature, culture, and intention like nowhere else, and the Tōhoku region is especially magical. It’s less traveled, deeply rooted in tradition, and full of those “how is this place real?” moments. From soaking in an onsen after a day on the trails to paddling along the rugged coastline, this trip is all about experiencing Japan in a more immersive, off-the-beaten-path way.

If your ideal vacation includes movement, fresh air, meaningful experiences, and incredible food (yes, we will be eating very well 🍣), this might be your kind of trip. I’m all about that balance of adventure and restoration: hike, explore, unwind, repeat.

I’ve thoughtfully curated this itinerary to showcase the best of this unique region, and I’d love nothing more than to share it with a small group of like-minded adventurers.
